Lovelies, Inspiration, and Encouragement

I’m not a huge shopper, or spender. I’m a saver and a minimalist (unless it involves fabric). Whatever… I’m cheap. But occasionally I’ll find some lovelies that even I can’t turn down, and I wanted to share them with you. And of course, since I try to avoid brick and mortar stores at all costs, these finds are almost always online.

Mr. Right found me this shirt at Target. He’s so good at picking out clothes for me (random fact: he buys me clothes all the time, but I have only bought him one vest and one t-shirt in the history of our dating/marriage… because he’s super picky… God bless him).

target shirt

I love the shirt because it’s a neutral, it’s loose enough to be forgiving, and it’s longer in the back and covers my rear… which means I can wear it with leggings. My goal in life is to wear leggings as often as I can possibly get away with. As long as my hiney is covered. Because, well, ick.

I have been reading this book, a Christian perspective on decorating. The gist: it’s okay to be imperfect. In fact, it’s preferred. It’s refreshing to this perfectionist’s soul… not to mention there are pretty pictures. And it has inspired me to do a ton of decorating in our house with stuff we already have, and selling tons of clutter on Facebook.

photo (87)

See above for evidence of my new desire to decorate with things we already have. I actually hung up pictures. The book teaches that decorating is all about enjoying things now and not waiting until you find the perfect item. Which has given me the freedom to just stick things on walls and table tops and tell myself that it’ll work until we figure out a more permanent plan. This happens to be in our dining room (we got that dresser for free and refinished it ourselves to turn it into a buffet that stores most of my tableware).

I’m pretty sure Mr. Right thinks I’ve lost my mind. I need to lend him the book. And if you look closely, there may or may not be 348 holes in that wall in our dining room. Whatever, we plan on repainting someday anyway. #reformedperfectionistil_570xN.711822817_5935

Speaking of decorating, I think this pillow would go perfectly in our bedroom. It’s just cool. (But let’s get real… it’s not in the budget… but maybe I can find an excuse to gift it to someone.)

9438Mr. Right and my inlaws got me a gift certificate for Christmas to this online boutique. If you don’t follow them on Instagram, go do it now (@shopthemint). Everything I’ve ever bought from there has been just as cute in person, and a flattering fit. I got this striped shirt with the adorable lace back right after Christmas, and I may or may not have worn it every other day in the month of January. Because I’m an adult, and if I want to wear the same shirt over and over and over… I can do that. Go me.

LindsayLetters_BeKindSet_1024x1024

And finally, I want to be Lindsay Letters when I grow up. She is such an inspiration to me (not to mention I have one of her prints framed on my nightstand). I simply adore her work.

What are some of your favorite finds lately? I’d love it if you would share in the comments!

Adopting Dallas

Mr. Right and I have been open about our intentions to adopt a baby at some point. Because of this, I’m fascinated by learning about other peoples’ adoption stories and love to cheer them on, whether in person or online. Adoption is such a beautiful thing and such a perfect picture of what God did for us – adopted us as sons and daughters and heirs.

I came across Bethany’s story on Facebook. A friend from high school shared a pic of the shirts they were selling to raise money to help pay for the adoption (which will cost them $30,000), and I totally dug the shirts. Like, I bought one just because it was so cool. And then I checked out Bethany’s blog and had a eureka moment. I want to be part of their story. I want to help them provide a home for Baby Dallas!

So here’s the Cliffs Notes version. You can read more about it on their blog, Life is Good. PS – They found out THIS WEEK that they’ve been matched with a birth mother and MAY have a baby in March! Which means we’ve got to get crackin’!

unnamed

Chris and I have been married for 7 ½ years and we have had our first baby’s name picked out for over 9 years. Boy or girl, the baby will be named Dallas.

Chris and I have always wanted to be adoptive parents whether we conceived or not, and due to different fertility issues that I face, we decided to start the adoption process in October of 2013. The adoption process is not an easy road, and it requires a lot of resources, so we are asking for your help!

Our adoption is going to cost about $30.000, and as of now we have about $10,000 left to raise.  Here is how some of that is divided up:

Orientation fee
Home study fee
Agency application and program fee
Attorney fees
Document preparation and authentication
Counseling
Traveling expenses
And much more

We’ve never felt an overwhelming peace like this about any decision before. We know that God’s got a awesome plan for us! We believe God already has our baby picked out; we just haven’t met him or her yet!

We would GREATLY appreciate your prayers and support!

Dallas shirtsSo, dear friends, this is where you come in. They are selling AWESOME t-shirts for just $20 over here. I’ve already bought one, and I’m going to buy another to give away to one of my readers. All you have to do is leave a comment with your name, t-shirt size, and an encouraging word for Bethany as she and her husband travel on this (long) journey toward adoption.

And even better… you can be part of their story by simply buying a shirt. How cool, to help a couple become a family, to give a baby boy or girl a forever home, simply by making a quick purchase. You can help change a family’s legacy for generations to come.

The deadline to buy a shirt is Feb. 9. The deadline to enter my contest is Monday, Feb. 2 at 6:00 p.m. Central. Let’s bless this family!

Thrifty Thursday: Cowboys and Indians

Mr. Right brought me home some absolutely gorgeous Indian tops from his recent trip. India has the greatest style, doesn’t it? They wear tops that are long and perfect to pair with leggings, giving me my two favorite things when it comes to fashion: a covered rear and uber comfort. Not to mention the gorgeous colors and patterns. Thank you India.

TT - India

This top is my favorite. For church last week, I paired it with my awesome thrifted cowboy boots (thanks sis, who snagged these for me 5+ years ago for about $20). Typically my rule with thrifting is that I will only buy something that I can wash, but I made an exception because these boots were in great shape. Non stinky boots at $20 is the mother of all exceptions.

TT - Wedding Shower2

I’m new to the whole bootie thing, which I realize makes me REALLY late to the party. I finally decided to jump in with both feet and I must say that the ones I got (thanks in-laws) are higher than most heels I’ve been sporting since, well, I got pregnant 2+ years ago. But they’re wedges, and what men don’t realize is that wedges are like ninjas – they’re secretly so much more comfortable than heels, which means you can wear them doubly high. Wedges are my jam.

TT - Wedding Shower

About four years ago DSW ran one of those awesome “Buy a pair of shoes and get a free purse” specials, and I snagged a purse that I carried for a year. Inside it was this tiny clutch, which was perfect for the couples wedding shower we went to last weekend. I don’t know about you, but when I carry something that was literally FREE, it makes me want to bring it up in every conversation.

“Hi there, nice to meet you. I’m Bethe, and I carry free purses.”

“DO YOU SEE MY FABULOUS CLUTCH THAT DIDN’T COST ME A SINGLE PENNY?!?!”

“HOW CAN YOU EAT THAT HORS D’OEUVRE WHEN YOU COULD BE ADMIRING MY FREE CLUTCH? SERIOUSLY, PEOPLE… GET YOUR PRIORITIES STRAIGHT!”

Maybe I should reign it in a little. I think I’m starting to scare people.

New print: Peace

Print

Raise your hand if you’re praying for peace about something. Peace about a big decision, peace about a loss, peace about something stressful or uncertain or scary or even the mundane. Peace… contentment… joy… they are friends that walk hand in hand, friends that I want sitting at my table.

God, give us peace that transcends ALL UNDERSTANDING. Give us peace in chaos. Guard our hearts and our minds on those super stressful days, when we feel like everything is spinning out of control, may we remember that the same God who created the universe is the one we’re clinging to. May we remember that you are big enough.

Need a daily reminder? I’ve got this print available in my Etsy shop.

Waiting for the next wave

IMG_1806

I got to go to the Catalyst Conference in Dallas last week for work, and it was life changing. I texted my boss in the middle of it and told her that I wasn’t sure yet what type of ROI we were going to get on our booth, but the two-day event had blessed my soul beyond my expectations.

There was good worship. Lots of it. And there’s something so wonderful about getting to worship in the middle of a work day. I guess that’s just another perk to this amazing job God sort of dropped in my lap. But in addition to the worship, which was just SO GOOD, we got to hear from some really great speakers. Typically the thought of sitting in a room listening to two days worth of “rah rah” pep talks makes me want to pluck out my eyeballs, but this was different. Each speaker pierced my heart, encouraged me, and got me EXCITED about ministry.

Danielle Strickland spoke about how ministry is like surfing. It’s 80 percent work, and 20 percent payoff. But those not willing to put in the work, to be in the trenches, to swim against the tide week in and week out, will never be in the right place when the wave comes. As someone who has surfed once (man, it was hard… but so fun), I totally get what she was saying.

It perfectly describes our English as a Second Language ministry. Mr. Right and I start our eighth semester of teaching English to refugees and immigrants next week. And let me tell you… it’s work. It’s never convenient to give up one night a week, to leave your crying toddler in the nursery, to eat dinner at 9:00 p.m. after you get home. To prepare a lesson and invest in student after student, wondering if what you’re doing will make a difference.

It’s hard work. But then you catch a wave. And you see lives change. And it’s SO MUCH FUN.

There was the family from Venezuela – a couple who were both doctors back home, but who couldn’t practice in America because their degree was worthless here. We were able to help one of them become a certified Respiratory Therapist so she could help her family, and we helped the other learn enough English that he could go back to community college to work toward a degree here.

There are the many students who have come through, not speaking a word of English, fresh off a plane from places far away. And after years of classes, they stop coming because they learned enough English to find jobs. Jobs that will change the future of their own lives and the lives of their families. Jobs that will change legacies. (Finding a job is the biggest barrier to success for immigrants.)

There have been students who were socially isolated. Not being able to speak English, they’re stuck living lonely lives with very few friends. Can you imagine what it would be like to have ABSOLUTELY NO FRIENDS? To never be able to talk to anybody but your immediate family? I have watched my students, who are so isolated, make friends with other students in the same situation. And their whole demeanor changes. They’re happier, more confident. They know they’re not alone in this big, new place.

I have seen students overcome racial, ethnic, and cultural barriers. One of my favorite memories was a class when a few of my West African students realized that the Egyptians sitting next to them were also from Africa. They had no idea, because they didn’t LOOK like Africans.

Or when I look over and see students from North Korea, Iran, Iraq, Sudan, Palestine, and Egypt in the same room together. Realizing that these people aren’t enemies. Or the Muslims who have never experienced love from a Christian back in their home country, and then they come to our little class, in our Baptist church, and experience genuine love and respect from Christians for the first time.

IMG_0231

And then there are the rare moments when I have gotten to see my students accept Christ and get baptized. Or their families get baptized. It typically takes several years. Which means that it’s easy to get stuck in the weeds, wondering if all of this work is making a difference. Will they ever come to know Jesus, the reason we serve in the first place? Week after week, year after year in the trenches. Swimming against the tide.

But when that wave comes… it’s so worth it. There is nothing in this world like it.

Friends, would you pray for our little ministry as it kicks off another semester next week? Pray that God would bring us more teachers and that he would bless our students.

I am all He says I am

I am all

Does anybody else have that still, small voice that tends to tell you lies? You know the kind: you’re not good enough, you’re not pretty enough, you’re not thin enough. You’re not as good of a homemaker as you should be, you’re not the mother you should be, you’re not a good enough friend, daughter, sister, employee, person. If only did more this… if only you were more like that… but you’ll never get there.

My friend, I have to battle every single day against this awful little voice that pushes me toward perfectionism. It’s a lie, it’s unhealthy, and it’s not of God. But take heart – God has overcome the world, and the God of the universe has chosen YOU. He defines you. He has called you beloved, he sings over you, he knows your name. He has called you daughter, heir, friend, his bride.

I heard a speaker this week who said that Jesus calls us his bride. If you think about a groom and the way he looks at his bride as she walks down the aisle… he doesn’t see her imperfections, her insecurities, her shortcomings. He sees her as his beloved.

My friend, you are defined by who GOD SAYS YOU ARE. Be blessed by these lyrics to my new favorite song (source at the bottom).

He whispers in my ear
Tells me that I’m fearless
He shares a melody
Tells me to repeat it
And it makes me whole
It reminds my soul

I am all He says I am
I am all He says I am
I am all He says I am
And He says I am His own

I was blinded by scales upon my eyes
Then He came like a light
And burned up all the lies
He set me free
He reminded me

I am all He says I am
I am all He says I am
I am all He says I am
And He says I am His own

Chains are broken
Scales are on the floor
Truth is spoken
I’m no orphan anymore

I am loved
I am new again
I am free
I’m no slave to sin
I’m saint
I am righteousness
I’m alive>

Wrenn at 18 Months

1800455_10106013956469904_7264506211568886624_n I know I say this every month, but 18 months is the BEST age. Wrenn’s little personality has really started to come through – I can tell she’s going to be a joker and a leader and strong-willed and outgoing. I don’t keep a baby book, so this post is mostly for me, so I can take a snapshot in time and remember this wonderful stage.

10474191_10152587711731120_6358865542577106399_n

Words
Wrenn loves to talk (which was a given, if you’ve ever met her dad and me). She will TRY to mimic just about any word we say, and sometimes it sounds like our word, and sometimes, well, it’s nothing like what we just said, which is extremely entertaining. Some of the words she uses include: mama, dadda, papa (grandpa), momo (grandma), more, happy, cracker, dough, tree, NO! (her current favorite), yeah, wow, woah, bath, baby, shoe, Jay (for Mama J, her grandma), ho ho (like Santa) and okay. She also knows the following animal sounds: meow, woof woof, and MOOOO!!! When I ask her “What does the cow say?” this girl will tip her head back, and with great delight say “MOOOOO!” She basically thinks every animal is either a dog or a cow, so anytime an animal comes on TV, I hear “MOOOO!”

Now, she understands SO MUCH more than she can say. She also does a lot of babbling to herself in another language. I love to silently watch her as she walks around her playroom, talking to herself so seriously in words that I don’t understand.

10868235_10152575578836120_6172366240026336940_n

Sign Language
Sign language has been a life saver for us – it has allowed her to communicate her desires with confidence, which eliminates a lot of frustration. Her current signs include: hungry, more, water, milk, change my diaper, sad. We’re also working on: tired, angry, happy. I encourage all parents to give sign language a try – it takes weeks, sometimes months of me using it before she starts using the sign, but it’s like one day she just adopts it. I always sign and speak the word at the same time, and it’s really no extra work for me. I use this website for quick video tutorials anytime I need to learn a new sign.10882271_10152519750186120_4488115642910489474_n

Food
Some days, Wrenn is such an adventurous eater, and her dad and I swell with pride. She loves (cooked) sushi, Indian food, prosciutto, brie, sweet potatoes, and scrambled eggs with mild salsa. Other days she wants nothing but crackers and grapes and blueberries. I hear this is pretty normal, and so we try really hard to not make food a battle, but to just start with small options and if she doesn’t look interested, try something else. She’s much more interested in breakfast and lunch than in dinner (I think she gets less hungry as the day goes on), and her go-to favorites include: pears, apples, shredded cheese, ham or turkey, grilled chicken, apple sauce, any sort of bread or cracker, and of course, anything sweet. Also – I have noticed that Mr. Right and I don’t eat many vegetables… oops. We’re trying to do better since little eyes are watching!

10891655_10152519394406120_5748714759414085398_n

Sleep
Wrenn has (almost) dropped her morning nap, and we haven’t quite gotten into a good rhythm for her afternoon nap. Lately she seems to be napping for me around 12:30ish and lays down anywhere from 1.5-3 hours, although some days, there’s no nap at all. And on those days… well, they’re not pretty. Wrenn seems to need a lot of sleep, just like me. At night, she typically goes to bed around 7:30 and wakes up around 7:00 a.m.

10847818_10152521718151120_5514842602282289727_n

Favorites
Wrenn’s favorite things include going to the park, riding in her red wagon, taking baths (she’ll yell “BATH!” and then run to the bathroom door), and dancing. OH, THE DANCING. This girl dances anytime she hears music – I wish I could live my life with such reckless abandon, not worrying about what anybody else thinks of me. She also seems to need lots of hugs/cuddles – she’s not the type of child to want to cuddle for long periods of time, but on certain days she’ll come up to me, give me a hug and a kiss, climb in my lap to be held, and then go back to playing… and repeat that over and over. I love it so much.

10449506_10152512684041120_8974316441726356956_n

Challenges
Wrenn is having some problems with hitting… other children, me, the dog, herself. It’s not a malicious act, but more caused by a lack of being able to control her emotions. I was told by a friend who is smarter than me that if I taught her words for her emotions, it would help her be able to express herself and might cut back on the hitting (which is akin to a tantrum). And so, we are diligently practicing our happy, sad, and angry signs. So far it hasn’t clicked, but again, it seems to take awhile for the signs to take hold, but once they do, she uses them effortlessly. In the meantime, I’m just thankful she isn’t biting anybody.

10411172_10152467672611120_310455595960231424_n

Little Wrenn
Dear child, you bring me such unspeakable joy. More than I knew was possible. You have caused me to love children – all children – in a way I never knew was possible. Being your mother is one of the greatest gifts God has ever given me, and I tell you every single night that you are an answer to many, many years of prayer.

Thrifty Thursday: Boots & Tutus

thrifted baby 1

My goodness, I love a good tutu, don’t you? I love it even more when it costs about $3. And I REALLY love it when it’s something Mr. Right picks out all by himself. Who would have ever thought that guy I spotted across my church parking lot for the first time would be picking out a pink tutu for my daughter five years later?

babythrift2

You know what else I love? Pink cowboy boots. (Hello… we live in Texas! Everybody has to have cowboy boots!) I also love this adorable “big girl” monogrammed backpack. Little Wrenn is SO PROUD to carry it all by herself (although she can barely walk with it on her back – it tips her over if there’s anything more than a sippy cup in there). And I’m so happy to not have to lug a giant baby bag around anymore. Yea for me! (Not pictured: her adorable matching lunch box… swoon!)

God of Hope

God of Hope

Doesn’t this verse just encourage your soul? Whether you’re in the midst of a major trial or enjoying a time of peace, you can celebrate that we worship a God of HOPE, who wants US to overflow with hope. He wants to give us joy and peace… not just a little, but ALL joy and peace!

If you need a little reminding of that this week, I hope you’ll enjoy a free download of this print I designed. Blessings, my friend!

Baylor Quilt

It has been awhile since I’ve posted a quilt update. Or any update, for that matter. I’m still trying to find the right time to practice my beloved hobby in between work and spending time with that darling family of mine, and writing, and well… you know, living life!

And hand-washing sippy cups. OH MY WORD I DO SO MUCH HAND-WASHING THESE DAYS!

But, I managed to pull this quilt top together over the past few months as I listened to books on tape (this one featured John Grisham’s Gray Mountain, which was pretty lousy), and ALMOST had it done in time to give it to my sister for Christmas. I had it done enough to present her with the quilt top for Christmas, and then with my week off of work, I managed to quilt and (machine) bind it the week between Christmas and New Year’s.

I am in love with how this one turned out. I guess my quilts are like my children… I love all equally (in theory anyway, since I currently only have one child), but each one has its unique personality that is worth celebrating.

Baylorquilt1

This one was birthed completely from my stash. I got the kelly green fabric from the vintage fabric stash we purchased from one of Mr. Right’s elderly clients, and the yellows all came from my stash. I have had a thing with yellow since forever (it was prominently featured in my wedding) and when I was looking for inspiration for a new project and found that gorgeous green fabric, I just knew I had to make a Baylor quilt!

I have been wanting to make a simple triangle quilt where half of the triangles are the same, and the other half are different, ever since I spotted a similar pattern at an old antique mall. There’s something so vintage and wonderful about the regularity of this pattern. And, well, you know I have an affinity for half square triangles. And my Baylor Bears.

Baylorquilt2

And since I prefer not to quilt from a pattern (it’s the one place in life where I break all the rules) I simply cut out what seemed like a million triangles and started a-sewing. And then I sat down to lay out my quilt, thinking I’d have enough leftover to make a doll quilt with the extras… and instead, I had the tiniest baby quilt you’ve ever seen. Those darn half square triangles (which are about 3 inches) didn’t take up as much space as I originally thought.

And so I added in some white sashing to let the squares “breathe,” and I’m so happy with the finished product!

Baylorquilt3

For the backing, I bought new fabric that had a vintage feel. Can’t you just imagine this same fabric on some 1960s housewife’s ruffled apron? I bound it with a green striped fabric from my stash (yea for my giant stash!) and presented it to my sister just a week after Christmas.

I wish you could feel how soft this quilt is, and how wonderful the 100% cotton batting turned out (typically I use a poly blend, but went with something new this time and am totally hooked). I hope every time she sees this quilt she will know I love her, and feel compelled to give a rousing “SIC EM BEARS!”
