Thrifty Thursday: A Dress and The Great Jean Jacket Debate

TT Old Navy

I was so thrilled when I found this dress WITH THE TAGS STILL ON at my local thrift store. It’s originally from Old Navy and I snagged it for more than half off the original price. I adore the color and the floral pattern that’s just perfect for spring. However, the cut was a little baggy around the middle, so I paired it with my favorite jean jacket to help give it some extra shape (and to make sure I didn’t look pregnant, because I’m not).

And that’s where Mr. Right and I got into a little debate about jean jackets. It’s true, I’m addicted to mine. I wear it with almost everything. It’s my clothing security blanket. I like how it adds an extra layer, makes a top more forgiving, makes me feel less exposed, and adds shape to something flowy. It’s a necessity.

Mr. Right says they’re out of style and I should stop hiding behind the jacket. That I should just GO for it, bare arms and all. And so I compromised – I wore my new thrifted dress once with the jacket (in my defense… it was a cold day!) and once without.

What do you think… is it time to retire my jean jacket? (PS – even if you say yes, I will probably keep wearing it. Old habits die hard…).

Thrifty Thursday: Dress-Up Clothes

Texas Lovely Thrifty Thursday

A few weeks ago we hit the dress-up lottery when my cousin sent us a box of her daughters’ outgrown dress-up clothes. God bless people who pass down hand-me-downs… especially when those hand-me-downs include Disney princess dresses and… {gasp}… plastic princess heels.Texas Lovely Thrifty Thursday 1 Texas Lovely Thrifty Thursday 3 Texas Lovely Thrifty Thursday 4

Thrifty Thursday: DIY Vintage Chalkboards

IMG_1051

I have this weird love for chalkboards, even though I’m not artistic and have pretty terrible handwriting. But this didn’t stop me from bringing more chalkboards into the house. I figured, make it now, figure out the details later.

Mr. Right scored us some gorgeous vintage doors FOR FREE from an elderly lady who was selling her house and happy to get rid of them. We have two more left that we’re saving for a special project which will probably happen sometime around 2018 (we have a big project list).

1

It was a pretty quick project. We lightly sanded the doors and then simply painted the edges white and the used chalkboard paint to paint the centers. They don’t match exactly, but I like to think it adds a little to the charm.

Then, Mr. Right simply screwed them into our wall with a drill and voila… a whole wall of chalkboards! They have turned into endless hours of entertainment for all three of us, including little Wrenn, who adds her own artwork to the bottom (see some of her work below).IMG_1589

It was my genius sister who suggested I use Pinterest as inspiration for my chalk art. And so you’ll see some familiar pics over here on my Chalkboard Pinterest Board. I’ve found that being imperfect makes it quirky and lovely. Perfection is not the goal.

I hope these doors tell stories and share encouragement and bring delight and provide our children a canvas for creating masterpieces for many years to come.

Thrifty Thursday: Cowboys and Indians

Mr. Right brought me home some absolutely gorgeous Indian tops from his recent trip. India has the greatest style, doesn’t it? They wear tops that are long and perfect to pair with leggings, giving me my two favorite things when it comes to fashion: a covered rear and uber comfort. Not to mention the gorgeous colors and patterns. Thank you India.

TT - India

This top is my favorite. For church last week, I paired it with my awesome thrifted cowboy boots (thanks sis, who snagged these for me 5+ years ago for about $20). Typically my rule with thrifting is that I will only buy something that I can wash, but I made an exception because these boots were in great shape. Non stinky boots at $20 is the mother of all exceptions.

TT - Wedding Shower2

I’m new to the whole bootie thing, which I realize makes me REALLY late to the party. I finally decided to jump in with both feet and I must say that the ones I got (thanks in-laws) are higher than most heels I’ve been sporting since, well, I got pregnant 2+ years ago. But they’re wedges, and what men don’t realize is that wedges are like ninjas – they’re secretly so much more comfortable than heels, which means you can wear them doubly high. Wedges are my jam.

TT - Wedding Shower

About four years ago DSW ran one of those awesome “Buy a pair of shoes and get a free purse” specials, and I snagged a purse that I carried for a year. Inside it was this tiny clutch, which was perfect for the couples wedding shower we went to last weekend. I don’t know about you, but when I carry something that was literally FREE, it makes me want to bring it up in every conversation.

“Hi there, nice to meet you. I’m Bethe, and I carry free purses.”

“DO YOU SEE MY FABULOUS CLUTCH THAT DIDN’T COST ME A SINGLE PENNY?!?!”

“HOW CAN YOU EAT THAT HORS D’OEUVRE WHEN YOU COULD BE ADMIRING MY FREE CLUTCH? SERIOUSLY, PEOPLE… GET YOUR PRIORITIES STRAIGHT!”

Maybe I should reign it in a little. I think I’m starting to scare people.

Thrifty Thursday: Boots & Tutus

thrifted baby 1

My goodness, I love a good tutu, don’t you? I love it even more when it costs about $3. And I REALLY love it when it’s something Mr. Right picks out all by himself. Who would have ever thought that guy I spotted across my church parking lot for the first time would be picking out a pink tutu for my daughter five years later?

You know what else I love? Pink cowboy boots. (Hello… we live in Texas! Everybody has to have cowboy boots!) I also love this adorable “big girl” monogrammed backpack. Little Wrenn is SO PROUD to carry it all by herself (although she can barely walk with it on her back – it tips her over if there’s anything more than a sippy cup in there). And I’m so happy to not have to lug a giant baby bag around anymore. Yea for me! (Not pictured: her adorable matching lunch box… swoon!)
