How I’m chasing after my dream, and it scares me to death

keep running

Before we got married, Mr. Right asked me what my biggest goal was in life.

To write a book.

It was an easy answer, something I’ve always felt compelled to do, from the time I sat in my high school English classes and savored every word of so many great authors. The dream continued through college, and my love for writing became more and more obvious as I pursued a journalism and English degree. Words are like water to my soul – as I go through my day, I narrate it in my head, looking for interesting ways to frame my ideas and observations, entertaining myself with a running dialogue and trying to find the right words to turn something ordinary into something interesting.

Maybe that’s how I ended up in advertising?

But back to the book. I was meant to write a book – my soul longs for it. But the rest of me had no idea where to begin. Books are just so… long. And intimidating. How could I commit to just one story, one set of characters with which I would develop such an intimate relationship? I would have to live with them forever – such a daunting idea that it made me terrified to even begin.

Besides, what if I wrote my book, and nobody liked it?

But good old Mr. Right, who pushes and pushes me toward being brave. He told me that if writing a book was my biggest goal, then he would do everything in his power to help me make it a reality.

Sometimes that kind of support is so annoying. He told me that he wanted my first chapter from me that Christmas, but I wasn’t ready. I wanted to put it off further.

But that Mr. Right is pretty persuasive, and so he got his first chapter, not by Christmas, but by the following Christmas.

And then life happened. I got pregnant, and very, VERY sick, and then, you know, I had a newborn and things like showering and feeding myself seemed like luxuries, so there was no time to write a book. As always, the seasons changed, and life became a tiny bit more manageable (I will never, ever, use the word “easier”), and so Mr. Right started pushing again.

What a waste of years to have a dream, and all you do is think about it, wish for it, but never actually do anything to accomplish it. That’s what I was doing. Mr. Right saw that, plus the fact that I needed a break from being a responsible adult every once in awhile, and told me that he was going to start giving me Monday nights off to work on my book. Between you and me, I was kind of hoping for Monday nights off to get pedicures and have dinner with girlfriends and do mindless things. But he specifically said it would be for my book.

And so, every single Monday night for the past 13 weeks or so, I have handed off the baby, driven alone to a coffee shop, and worked on my book for a few hours. Some nights I churn out five pages, one night I churned out 15. At the beginning, I took what I had already written (about 30 pages) and rewrote everything, which took several weeks. And then, after studying the work flow of other authors, I learned that the best thing to do is to just throw words on the page and get through a story, and not get caught up in editing and re-editing and getting lost in the weeds. First, birth the story, then make it beautiful. And so I’m in the process of birthing a story, something that is more than half-way through (although, with plenty of holes that will need to be filled in later).

You guys, I am more than half-way through with my book! With my life dream! Do you know how mind-boggling that is, to actually DO what I have always felt like I was made to do?

It’s not easy. Every Monday I make five excuses of why I need to stay home instead of go write. And every Monday night Mr. Right shoos me out the door, and once I get settled in with my decaf latte or hot tea, with classical music playing through my headphones, I get lost in this story that I’m trying to tell.

It’s terrifying and outside my comfort zone, and yet I am so… proud.

I’m being brave. And guess what… it’s fun.

13 Things new parents stress over that seem silly later

This is one of my favorite posts I’ve ever done. Seeing moms who APPEAR to have it all together (and come on, moms of 5 kids who are SO LAID BACK) admit that they stressed over silly things with their first kid makes me feel a lot better about the times I’ve worried about Wrenn’s poop (or lack thereof).

photo (57)Cooking with kids: Go ahead and play with your food

Mr. Right and I want to instill a love of cooking in our kids, plus, well, cooking is just FUN when you’re little. It’s an excuse to make a mess, stir things… it’s like a giant science experiment. In fact, after writing this article I decided to let Wrenn have her first “go” at cooking… on the back porch with a bowl of water, a bowl of ice, and lots and lots of cooking utensils. She had the greatest time of her 12-month life stirring, banging things, and splashing the water everywhere. Isn’t that what childhood is all about… getting messy? Especially on a hot summer day…

And, just a friendly reminder, all of my digital downloads in my shop are only $5. And, I’ve got some baby dresses available.

Have a lovely day!

Cross-Eyed Quilt

Sometimes I buy fabric, and I have no idea what to do with it. So, it just sits on the shelf of my sewing studio, occasionally I pull it out and admire it, steal small corners for other projects (if you look closely, you’ll recognize two of these fabrics from one of Wrenn’s dresses I made her), and wait until inspiration finds me. For this fabric, that waiting probably took me over a year (I’m pretty sure I bought this before Wrenn was born).

quilt1

I pulled out my Pinterest app on my phone and scanned my Not Your Grandma’s Quilt board looking for ideas, and this one jumped out at me. The layout was super easy, and that quilt will now live on the floor of my sewing studio until I finish piecing her – hopefully in the next few days (some quilts have been known to live in there – which doubles as a spare bedroom – for weeks or months).

Someone asked me if I bought pre-cut squares. Oh, bless her. This mama rarely buys charm packs (with the assorted pre-cut fabric) because (a) they’re more expensive, and (b) my options become more limited because there’s just a few pieces of each type of fabric in a pack. I was definitely on my hands and knees for about 90 minutes cutting out all of these 6-inch squares (that is, after I ironed all of the fabric first). But, compared to the half-square triangles I tend to love, this moved much faster.

quilt2

I tend to only have time to quilt on Saturday mornings during Wrenn’s morning nap, which means very little quilting time. But Mr. Right was working all day Saturday, and I was caught up on all my chores and errands, so after she woke up, I decided to create a temporary sewing space in our living room, right next to her playroom, so that she could play next to me while I continued to sew. It was wonderful – I think this will be my new go-to plan when Mr. Right is gone. (For those of you wondering, I kept the iron on the kitchen counter with the cord up on the counter where she couldn’t reach, so there was no danger of her pulling it down on herself – one of the biggest reasons why I won’t let her wander into my sewing room… ever.)

I wish you could understand just how happy I am when I’m working on a quilt – I listen to a book on tape and get to create something new and pretty while I escape from the world. Step by step I watch everything come together – it’s relaxing and exciting and such a creative outlet. It’s one of my very favorite things in the whole world. And since Saturday I was able to do it while Wrenn played next to me, I got to sneak in some baby hugs while I worked. Pure bliss.

Baby Girl Dresses and a Print Sale

3

Do you remember that handmade dress I made for Wrenn’s birthday party? I had so much fun making it, I decided to make a few for my shop! The best thing about these dresses are that since the straps are adjustable, the dress can grow with your baby. In fact, as Wrenn continues to grow taller and taller (hello, 90th percentile), I plan on her wearing her dress with leggings or skinny jeans, layered with a cardigan throughout the fall/winter.1This pink floral dress comes in size 12-18 months (Wrenn’s size… I’m tempted to keep it for her) and features pink contrast stitching and the cutest little strawberry floral fabric for the bottom. I love it.

2 This other dress features some gorgeous red florals (almost feels Hawaiian) with red trim. I should say that the red is a gorgeous color – a mix between red and deep orange and pink – it’s so pretty in person. I loved it so much, I made myself an infinity scarf out of the same fabric. I made two of these dresses: one is size 3 months, the other is size 12-18 months.
4

I have also slashed the price of all my digital downloads in my shop to just $5. I hope that if you’ve been eyeing something that would serve as an encouragement for you, that for just $5 you’ll now be able to snag it. You can print these on your home printer, or for less than $1 you can print yours at Office Depot (just upload it on their website and you can usually pick it up the same day from their printing counter). We have these prints framed all over our house, and I absolutely love visiting friends and spotting them at their homes too!5

As life continues to get busier and busier, I’m really rethinking how much longer I’m going to keep my shop open, so I hope you’ll take advantage of it soon! I’ve also got a few quilts in the works that I’m quite excited about that should be in the shop in a matter of weeks.

Have a lovely day, my friends.

Where you can find me

You guys, I am a blogging FOOL these days. In addition to this little site, I write two blogs for work and have recently been asked to become a regular contributor on a third. If you couple that with the novel I’ve been working on every Monday night for the past two-and-a-half months, well, I’m doing a lot of writing these days.

In case you missed it, here are a few of my articles running other places:

  • A working mom’s guide to leaving the house where I give five ways to make your morning routine less stressful.
  • Books for Babies where I give a list of my favorite board books for little ones.
  • Bunting 101: 10 Ways to Dazzle Your Guests which, between you and me, I wrote because I knew I wanted to make bunting for Wrenn’s first birthday party and I needed to find some EASY tutorials. I am a strong believer in killing two birds (no pun intended) with one stone. If you’re planning a shower or party, you’ll find some fun ideas over there.

I hope you have a LOVELY day!

A BIRD-day Party: Wrenn Turns One!

We hosted Wrenn’s first birthday party about a week ago. We decided to keep things simple by only inviting our immediate family and hosting it off-site so we didn’t have to do any major decorating (or cleaning) of our house. It was such a wonderful time celebrating our baby girl and the way she has blessed us during her first year.

bird day party - blog

Since her name means bird, we opted for a simple bird theme. We rented the same house we stayed at for our anniversary a few months ago (which I just realized I never blogged about), and we matched our simple decorations with the house’s color scheme. It was so low-stress and easy (well, as far as parties are concerned) – we brought everything over to the house around noon, set things up, and then took naps before our guests arrived. A nap on a party day is a rare (and wonderful) treat.

I designed all of the paper goods myself, we used fresh flowers from our garden, and catered barbecue from our favorite local hole-in-the-wall. (Is it weird that we throw so many parties that we own our own chafing dishes?)

I realized that other than the professional photos we’ve taken, I hadn’t printed a SINGLE photo of Wrenn or our family from last year, so this party was a great excuse to do a little catching up. (Am I the only one who never gets around to printing all of the photos on their phone?)

2

For party favors I ordered magnets from here (the same place I printed my Instagram photos from – I loved the quality!). I also asked people to fill out a notecard with their favorite memory from Wrenn’s first year. I would love to do this every year on her birthday so that someday she can look back on all of these notes written by her favorite people.

10

And of course, I sewed Wrenn a special BIRD-day dress to wear. Be watching for a tutorial on that later – I even learned how to use the button-hole attachment on my machine. Thank goodness for YouTube tutorials.

6

Wrenn did some hard-core playing with her cousins and her new toys.

I love this series of pictures of Wrenn and my sister, Sarah. She’s such a good sport!

4She LOVED her cupcake. That should be a surprise to no one. And confession: this is most definitely NOT Wrenn’s first taste of sugar. Life is too short not to share bites of whatever you’re eating with your baby. After all, we’re raising a future foodie.
5

After everybody left, Mr. Right, Wrenn, and I enjoyed our little rental and spent the night. There was an old-fashioned clawfoot bathtub. I may have taken a bath before AND after the party. Just maybe.

7I will have such wonderful memories from this day. Thanks to all of our family members who helped make this day special for little Wrenn, and for Mr. Right and me. Happy first birthday, little Wrenn!

Happy Birthday Wrenn

birthday2

Baby Girl, today is your birthday. One whole year. That’s how long you’ve been on this planet – how long our world has been a better place because of my big-eyed beauty. You have gotten so BIG and FUN and CURIOUS. You’re adventurous and funny and every day is brighter because you’re here.

1013090_10151499701626120_80291370_n

One whole year. That’s how long I’ve been a mama. Man, I had a lot to learn this first year, but next to being a wife, it’s my very favorite role in the world. I feel like I was created to be your mother. It’s the biggest privilege of my life, to be the one God trusted to care for you and to point you toward Him. To love you on His behalf.

1504020_10151805530906120_427268784_n

One whole year. That’s how long we’ve been a family of three. Mr. Right and I prayed and prayed and PRAYED that God would give us a baby, and YOU are that answer to our prayers. It is such a blessing to me to watch the way you light up when you see your daddy, the way you search for him when you hear his voice. And to watch your daddy when he’s with you… well, it’s the best thing. He is such a good dad… with his weekly “daddy-daughter day” where it’s just the two of you, seeking out new adventures (usually involving barbecue or an outdoor project of some sort). You are blessed, Baby Girl, more than you will be able to understand for many, many years.

Wrenn Olivia, on your birthday, I want you to know that I love you more than I ever knew my heart could love. You are a blessing, and an answer to prayer, and you will always have a home in my arms.

Happy birthday, Baby Girl.

Friends – feel free to wish Wrenn a happy birthday in the comments below!

Low-Volume Quilts

Low-Volume Quilt Defined: This is a quilt using very light, muted fabrics featuring mostly whites or light-colored prints.

4

This past weekend little Wrenn took a 3.5-hour morning nap, and Mr. Right was at work, which meant I had some rare, uninterrupted quilting time!

I’ve got two low-volume quilts going right now, and I am in love with the look of both. I love working with brightly colored fabrics, but there’s something so soothing and romantic about a quilt that features light fabrics without looking childish. I think it’s the opposite – it can be so sophisticated – not to mention they look great in any room.

photo (49)

1. The herringbone quilt on the left is MY quilt (aka – I’m not giving this one away). I used this as my inspiration, but followed my own pattern (hand-drawn on a piece of paper), and pieced it

with gorgeous vintage fabrics I purchased from a lady who was moving to a nursing home and needed to find a good home for her 50-year stash (I’m that good home). I want this quilt to be big and snuggly, so right now it’s 65 x 65 inches, but I’m considering adding another couple of borders to make it even bigger. My only concern is adding too much “weight” to this low-volume quilt.

I just adore the tiny floral prints on this quilt – I can imagine that each one has a story, and after collecting dust in this woman’s home for dozens of years, now they get new life. {sigh}photo 2 (11)

2. I have a love-hate relationship with the star quilt on the right. I used this tutorial, and my hope had been that this quilt was going to be a fast, easy first quilt after little Wrenn was born last summer. At the time, I was sleep-deprived and overwhelmed with my new role as a mother, and wondering how I would ever manage to do anything for myself in the midst of our new normal, when Mr. Right gave me the “night off” and told me to go do something fun. Bless him.

I locked myself in my sewing studio and whipped out this quilt in just one evening. I was SO PROUD of the finished product and went in to show Mr. Right, who was in his workshop while Baby Girl slept in her bouncy seat next to him. I proudly held up the quilt, and…

“Some of your squares are upside down,” my oh-so practical husband told me, matter-of-factly.

I almost shot him. I blame the hormones. And the sleep deprivation. But I was so mad at that moment that I wadded the stupid quilt up and tossed it in my sewing room. Once or twice over the next few months I got the nerve to pull out the quilt and look at it, to see if my mess-up was too noticeable. It was. And I just couldn’t stand to pull everything apart to make the fix (I had flipped two of the inner squares upside down, which meant taking the whole thing apart).

But this past Saturday… I was finally able to bring myself to pull out the seam ripper and go to work fixing the quilt. It only took me about an hour, and was actually pretty simple. Oh, what a difference a year and some good nights of sleep can do to one’s outlook on quilting.

And on life.

I do plan on selling this quilt in my shop, so keep an eye out for it in the next few weeks. I still need to pick out the perfect backing fabric and get her quilted. But it feels good to have this quilt top DONE. Whew.
